Hiroona

In May 2023, I bought and sailed Hiroona - an Endurance 37 - from the UK to Denmark; my new home. Sometimes it's a bit cramped, sometimes it would be nice to be properly dry, but the adventure is absolutely worth it.

Sailing has always been a part of my life. Grandad spent his weekends navigating the mud flats of Morecambe Bay in the UK. Despite learning to sail in the shadow of a nuclear power station, Dad was captivated too and subsequently taught us all how to sail on the slightly more idyllic waters of the Lake District. Not bad, learning key lessons - such as "flappy side up" - on the same lake that inspired the stories of Swallows and Amazons.

A few years on the racing circuit, I later became a sailing instructor at Glenridding Sailing Centre, just over the fell on Lake Ullswater.

Which makes my decision to undertake a PhD in landlocked Arizona quite bizarre. During that time, my sailing fix could only be satisfied sporadically when returning home to join Mum and Dad along the west coast of Scotland in their boat, Pellegrina.

So of course, when I moved to the coastal city of Aarhus, I was only ever going to live on a boat. Plus, the rent in Denmark is more than a touch expensive!
